| 10/11/2007 | Stockport 1s v Newton | 3-2 |
This weekend SHC 1's played Newton in the 2nd Division Cup
Competition. The first half was dominated by Stockport and winger
Jenny Plant was on hand to open the score when she chipped in at the
post from a cross that came in from the right. It could have been a
bagful more except that the Newton keeper was playing out of her
skin and stopped everything. Somehow it remained 1-0 at half time
despite Stockport's dominance.
Stockport also started the second half well when they scored from a
short corner. Lisa Horbury's strike on goal was deflected in by Sam
Piggin on the right hand post to put Stockport 2 up.
Newton then raised their game and mounted a comeback that had the
Stockport defence floundering and making mistakes. They profited and
pulled it back to 2-2 at full-time. Only one team could go through
to the next round so extra time of 10 minutes each way was played.
Stockport re-grouped and regained their confidence in extra time.
Newton tried to soak up the pressure and again, it was their keeper
who kept them in the game, with some spectacular diving saves.
Finally, with the keeper on the ground after yet another save the
ball popped out to Jenny Worth who's scoop on the reverse stick side
lifted the ball over the keeper to score the winning goal. It
couldn't have been much tighter as there was only 5 seconds of extra
time left on the umpire's watch when Jenny scored.
We certainly hadn't played our best game, but it's a mark of a good
team that we could pull together and still win to get through to the
next round.
