On one of wettest and coldest days of the year so far

24/11/2007 Stockport 2s v Tameside Ladies 1 2-3

On one of wettest and coldest days of the year so far saw Stockport 2nd’s take on Tameside 1st (who would win award for one of the nicest kit!) at Werneth, with many of the players playing in a rep match selection before the league match; this was always going to be tough against another well drilled Tameside team.

From the start, you could see that Tameside were an organised team keeping their shape and soon had our defence of Sally Fort, Helen Elcock and Adele Lumsden on the back foot. Our midfield of Lucy Rowbottom, Emily Smith and Dunners, worked hard but Stockport were before long, one goal down, however the front line of Laura “McFlurry” Woodhead, Josie Wynne, Hannah Williams and Sam Piggin didn’t give up and soon equalised with a well taken goal from Laura McFlurry.

However Tameside were on the attack almost from the restart and even with the added speed of Wendy Van Tonder and Chole Edgerton  coming on, Tameside soon got another one, Chole also got a ball in the face, from a short corner at the end of the 1st half and had to retire injured.

In the 2nd half, Stockport worked hard to get on top of the game, and after a quick break and some great passes from Amy Nicklin, Sam Piggin and Lucy Rowbottom, Laura calmly put the ball past the Tameside keeper, for her and Stockport 2nd goal. But as darkness fell, Tameside never gave up, at all times keeping their width and in the dying minutes they had a penalty corner from which after some ping pong passes from our defence and Tameside attackers, the ball ended up in the back of the net for 2- 3. With only a few minutes left Emma Woodhead was sent to bolster the attack but it was all a bit late. Final score 2 – 3 to Tameside.

Well played everyone in awful conditions and thanks to Dave for umpiring.

Man of the match: Wendy Van Tonder
