| 10/11/2007 | Stockport 1s v Newton | 2-1 |
SHC suffered their first defeat this season when they played Bury & Elton 2's away from home. Finding the right sports centre seemed to be tricky enough for some players!. Perhaps that was a sign that we weren't going to be at our best, especially with several key players unavailable to play this weekend.
Bury dominated from the start and Stockport really struggled to gain any significant possession or to get their passing going. Despite Bury's dominance, the defence were covering the circle well, and cutting out the majority of the attacks which were mainly coming down the opposition's right wing. Eventually they did let one slip through and Bury got a goal up.
AAs the half progressed Stockport started to play better. Midfielder, Rachel Dunley, playing her first game for the team was instrumental in setting up a lot of the Stockport attacks. Clare Atherton and Amy Nicklin were causing the Bury defence a lot of problems and both had shots that needed to be saved by the keeper. It was Jenny Plant who found a way through a tight Bury defence with an accurate shot from the top of the circle that skimmed past the the keeper's foot and into the far corner of the goal to pull Stockport back on level terms before half time.
In the second half Bury were sensing victory and pushed players higher up the pitch and started playing with more venom as Stockport tired. It looked like Bury were going to get a second when, with the keeper down, and the goal wide open their player pushed a shot that just went wide of the post. However, soon after Bury got their reward when a shot corner routine lead to a mistake and a penalty stroke was awarded. Bury successfully converted the stroke to go 2-1 up. Stockport fought hard for an equaliser right up until the final whistle, but to no avail.
