A frantic end to the game

Another interclub match saw a clash this week between the 4th and 5th teams. Both teams started well but it was, yes you've guessed it, Debbie Mole who opened the scoring and her account. The youngsters tried to get back on level terms straight after the restart and some good work from Ceire McManee and Sally McRoberts nearly paid off, only good keeping by Jeanne Woolston kept them out. More pressure from the 4th team resulted in a short corner, taken by Ann Adamson it was converted by Nat Sutherland whose fantastic chip dropped just over the keeper to make it

2-0. Again the 5th team fought back and this time their persistance paid off with a goal from Christina Bates just before half time.

The 2nd half was like a different game, a few positional changes by the 5th team saw them put the 4th's defence under a little more pressure than they would have liked. Having fought off a number of attacks a loose ball was picked up by Debbie Mole who seemed to have a free run through a parting defence, keeper Julie Gavin had little chance as Debbie wound up a blistering shot which nearly went through the backboard!

A ball played across the cirlce was brilliantly turned in by Justina Maddocks making the score 4-1 and another goal from Debbie Mole made it 5-1 and the end of the game, or so we thought! How wrong we were, the 5th's suddenly stepped up a gear and some great play saw Ceire McManee fire home from close range making it 5-2. Another attack by the 5th's saw Jeanne Woolston unable to clear the ball from under her body resulting in a penalty flick being awarded. Sally McRoberts stepped up to take it and as cool as you like placed the ball in the bottom right corner making it 5-3, now we had game on.

The 4th team regrouped and began to get on top again and when Julie Gavin was unable to clear the ball from under her body, a flick was awarded at the other end. Debbie Mole stepped up to take it but a great save from Julie with the tip of her stick kept the 5th team in the game. After a 3rd penalty flick was awarded for feet on the line, the 4th's had chance to bury the game once and for all. Again Debbie stepped up but was denied another goal, this time though the goals weren't side enough! It only just missed.

A late rally saw Rachel Owens make it 5-4 and so ensued a frantic end to the game. The 4th's managed to hang on and gained a very hard fought victory. Well done.

It was a great performance by the youngsters who must have taken some encouragement from the game. Well done to all of you but we had to give player of the match to Julie Gavin for a great performance in goal. Well done Julie.
