| 16/02/2008 | Stockport 5s v Manchester University 5th | 3-0 |
Half term played havoc with the young 5th team side as everyone was ski-ing,
visiting grandparents or injured so Stockport had 8 players against Manchester
Uni's squad of 15. But the Stockport 8 were not phased and certainly were not
going to make it easy for the Uni side. Although under alot of attack
Stockport's defence were solid Alison Turner, Natasha Getcheffsky (who needs to
practice hitting the ball!) and Rachel Dunley closed down lots of play and hit
the ball clear to Leah Perkins and Abi Saunders in midfield.
Debbie Mole created chances and gave the midfield a target to aim for up front
but as a lone forward it was very difficult to receive the feed and when Debbie
did she had little option with no other forwards. Leah Perkins, Ceire McNamee
and Abi Saunders were the work horses pushing up supporting Debbie but then back
tracking to help out the out numbered defence.
Just as a 0-0 half time score was in sight Manchester Uni crossed the ball in
and after a scramble found one of their players on the far post who managed to
score their first goal. Stockport had a quick counter attack which took Man Uni
by surprise but Debbie Mole was just unable to control the last touch and the
ball went wide.
Pleased with their first half effort Stockport came out as they had finished the
lst half with a quick attack but Man Uni came back with a counter attack and
although their player was channelled wide she managed to hit the ball past
Stockport's defence looking like it was going off the back line and somehow
managed to get her stick on the end of it and Man Uni went 2-0 up.
Being 3 players down was taking its toll on the Stockport side and goal keeper
Andrea Getcheffsky was kept busy with mostly soft shots to clear but just before
the final whistle Man Uni had their best play of the game and 3 excellent shots
on goal - 2 were saved but it was 3rd time lucky, final score 3-0. The score did
not reflect the game and had we had a full squad I'm 100% certain it would have
been a very different result - no half term games next season please!!
Player of the day - Abi Saunders
