| 23/02/2008 | Stockport 1s v Bury Elton 2s | 3-4 |
Stockport struggled in the first half as the opposition appeared
to be first to every ball and attacking with speed and numbers. We
conceded two goals early on due to poor marking in the circle and
then a third when the team over-committed and left the defence
out-numbered. But at 3-0 down we weren't going to admit defeat.
Jenny Worth came on in midfield and her pace immediately had an
impact and the opposition were reluctant to come forward in numbers
again. Lisa Horbury had several chances in front of the goal but was
thwarted by the diving keeper. Stockport's first goal came from a
short corner when Amy Nicklin fired an unstoppable shot on target.
In the second half, Stockport had most of the play and lots of
ambition, pressing hard for the goals we needed. Again the
opposition goalie was on hand to frustrate by making numerous saves.
With 10 minutes to go, Stockport desperately needed to find a way
through the tight defence and did so. Two goals came in a similar
way, with the ball crossed in from the right and Jenny Plant scoring
on the far post. Having worked so hard to get ourselves back on
level terms, our players wanted the win and continued to attack.
Unfortunately Stockport over ambition caused us to lose the ball in
midfield and we conceded a free hit it outside our circle in the
final minute of the game. The opposition sent up players in numbers
and their "big hitter" who banged the ball into the circle. In a
reflex, the Stockport Goalie saved but the rebound fell straight to
a Bury and Elton player who scored the winning goal in the last play
of the match, leaving Stockport players gutted!.
