Another interclub game for the 4th team saw them take on the youthful 5th team, well sort of youthful! Unfortunately both teams were a little depleted this week, the 4th team just having the edge with 10 players.
The game started well with both teams having chances but it was a good way into the 1st half before the deadlock was broken, a welcome goal from Debbie Mole her lean spell finally over. Some excellent saves from Andrea kept the 5th team in the game and they were back on terms before half time when Christina Bates fired one past Jeanne Woolston to make it 1 -1.
A positional change plus an injection of Vitamin C provided by Barbara Bailey’s oranges (a rare treat these days), had more of an effect on the 4th team as, for the second week on the run they came out fighting and it wasn’t long before they took the lead. A short corner found its way to Justina Maddock whose first shot produced another excellent save from Andrea. Unfortunately Justina wasn’t giving up and her follow up found the goal, albeit with a slight deflection from an attackers foot, one the umpire had failed to see although we did try and own up to it, sorry! It was a relief when Justina got her second goal making it 3 – 1, the little deflection off the foot was soon forgotten. It came from a long corner taken by Hilary Clamp who fired the ball across the circle to Justina Maddock who with a flick of the wrist turned it into the goal.
The young side certainly didn’t give up and continued to pressure the 4th’s defence, unfortunately they were met by Sharon Bostandji, who had an excellent game at right back and on the odd occasion that they did get through they were unable to hit the target. 3 -1 soon became 4 -1 when a break from the halfway line saw Viv Hudson slot home a cross from the right side.
Natasha Getcheffsky and Alison Turner defended well and managed to grind down a few tired legs, a quick ball out of defence found Sam Piggin whose pace carried her through the midfield the through the defence to score a well deserved goal.
Justina capped off a great performance getting her hatrick but was just pipped to the post for player of the match, that went to Sharon Bostandji who had her best game of the season. Final score 5 – 2.
Well done to both teams, another good game. What a great team we play for.
Player of the match for the 5th team went to Christina Bates.
