25/01/2009 Stockport 2s v Urmston 2s 2-4

Stockport 2’s met Urmston who are at the top of the 2nd division, with a number of changes to the team, it took a while for Stockport to settle down and get their game together, but with some great defending from Wendy Van Tonder, Helen Elcock and Julie Griffiths and Angela Fuggle Urmston began to become frustrated with their lack of opportunities.  The Stockport midfield of Leah Perkins, Emily Smith and Beks Evans began to find their feet and with excellent work from Jax Phieffer Stockport were unlucky not to score. 1 – 1 at half time.

In the 2nd half with the first attack of the game Stockport were 1 down, a free hit into the circle got a lucky deflection from an outstretched Urmston stick and Angela Fuggle in goal had no chance, but Stockport didn’t let their heads go down and with increasing pressure from Phieffer, Nat Sutherland, Sam Piggin, Debbie Mole and Nicola Attoe Stockport launched attack after attack and Sam Piggin was unlucky not to score 3 or 4 goals (hole in stick?). The defence still needed to concentrate as when Urmston attack they did so in numbers, Sally Fort made a brilliant goal line clearance to keep Stockport in the game, with 15 minutes left on the clock, after a number of penalty corners Stockport were awarded penalty stroke Phieffer stepped up to take it but put it just wide of the bottom left corner of the goal. In the last seven minutes Emily Smith on the left played the ball into the circle and Sam Piggin swept the ball through a crowd of players and the ball finally went over the line.

Final score 1 -1 a great result and thoroughly all round club effort.
