Stockport 1s made an impressive start to the new season with a
convincing win over Urmston 2s. 6-0 is a score line that might
suggest the competition ‘didn’t turn up’ but this wasn’t the case:
Stockport had to work hard for all the goals and for the clean
sheet.
Stockport looked hungry from the start and rocked Urmston with a
well-executed, and fast, passing move thumped home by Laura Woodhead
in less than 4 minutes. Urmston clearly wanted to respond, and put
the defence under some pressure. The experience of Wendy van Tonder,
Julie Griffiths and Helen Elcock showed in their refusal to be
rattled and the ability to intelligently turn defence into attack.
Great positional awareness from Clare Atherton, Lucy Rowbottom and
Rachel Dunley meant that Stockport repeatedly caught Urmston on the
counter. With Jenny Worth’s brain working as hard as her legs, and
Jeny Plant and Laura Woodhead making full use of the width of the
pitch to left and right, Stockport began cutting through Urmston’s
defence and the deserved second goal came from Jenny Worth on 25
minutes.
A second goal from Jen Worth just two minutes into the second half probably sealed the game for Stockport, but didn’t kill it: credit to Urmston for continuing to look for a goal right to the end. However, it wasn’t to be and Stockport who took advantage, opening up gaps as Urmston pushed forward. Laura Woodhead got her second 23 minutes into the half, Lisa Horbury’s persistence in front of goal paid off five minutes later, and PC Atherton, dodgy foot and all, popped up in the D to slot one home a minute before the whistle.
Stockport’s eleven all played their socks off and deserved the great result – with talent like this, who needs substitutes!
