The summer draws to a close and the hockey season is with us once more. The weather for Saturday's 1st game of the season wasn't very conducive to playing - blue skies, sunny and a Celsius temperature in the 20s. Newly promoted into the 3rd Division Stockport 4s fielded a considerably younger side than the well established Newton team. The first 5-10 minutes were well balanced with the young side holding their own however, Newton stuck to the task and the tide turned for the remainder of the half resulting in Stockport being 4-0 down by half time. Stockport's tackling was sharp, and the passing and movement was a joy to watch but it was the more experienced home side that entered the Stockport's half, repeatedly putting the defence under pressure and securing the win. Player of the match Claire Higgs. Final score Newton 1s 7 v Stockport 4s 0.
Stockport 3s travelled to Failsworth on Sunday for their first game of the season against Oldham 2s. The visitors' confidence increased as the game progressed and numerous chances were created and penalty corners won but not converted.
Oldham kept up the pressure and finally produced a counterattack which resulted in a penalty corner and with their first shot on target, they scored with a little help from Stockports defender who knocked in a home goal! It was a hammer blow before half-time, but captain Adele Lumsdon gee'd the team up at the break and the 2nd half began positively and although Stockport put on a great 2nd half performance they couldn't find the equaliser. Final Score Oldham 2s 1 v Stockport 3s 0.
Stockport 1s started the season with a convincing win away at Urmston 2s. Goals from Jenny Worth (2); Laura Woodhead (2); Lisa Horbury (1) and Clare Atherton (1) secured a 6-1 win.
