Bernadette Pheiffer was nominated Player of the Match deservedly so but all the team gave 110% in what was always going to be a difficult match given it was the first time we had played together and similar with all teams in Stockport Hockey Club - were a team of mostly defenders!!

The fixture between the top two teams in Division 2 was certainly going to be a competitive match. For the first 15 minutes Bury and Elton had the upper hand and seem to dominate play and possession with ease. Stockports defence of Gemma Cook, Helen Elcock, Sally Fort and Ceri Jones soaked up the pressure

A stiff talking too and some guidance on positions and being first to the ball rather than waiting for it to come all the way paid off. Becks Evans with Claire Lumsden started putting pressure on the Manchester University defence and Stockport started the 2nd half the stronger side with a couple of efforts going wide.

Newton then raised their game and mounted a comeback that had the Stockport defence floundering and making mistakes. They profited and pulled it back to 2-2 at full-time. Only one team could go through to the next round so extra time of 10 minutes each way was played. Stockport re-grouped and regained their confidence in extra time.

A combination of Remembrance Sunday and fear of being cup tied made this a 9 a-side game but it worked out really well and gave some of our young players a full match and plenty of pitch to cover! It was experience (not allowed to say old) versus young legs and it was the experience (age) of the 4th team that took an early goal from the off.

Both teams played a fast paced, end-to-end game right from the start. The only surprise was that, after 30 minutes, neither team had managed to score. Both teams were too good for it to remain that way and with only a few minutes of the half remaining, Jenny Plant met a cross to put Stockport 1-up. However, he university team replied swiftly to level the score in the final minute of the half.

SHC suffered their first defeat this season when they played Bury and Elton 2s away from home. Finding the right sports centre seemed to be tricky enough for some players!.
From the off, the Uni team meant business, attacking and putting the defence of Helen Elcock, Wendy Van Tonder and Sally Fort under constant pressure for the first 20 minutes. The midfield of Emily Smith, Hannah Williams and Adele Lumsden really struggled to make any headway and the forwards of Laura and Emma Woodhead , Lisa Horbury and Lucy Rowbottom hardly saw the ball.

The second half was a more dominate performance as Tameside appeared to tire. Midfielders Chloe Egerton and Charlie Sims hovered at the end of the Tameside and prevented the opposition from clearing the ball out of defence. Under constant pressure the Tameside players tired and second half goals came from Lisa Horbury (1), Amy Nicklin (PC), Charlie Sims (1) and Sam Piggin got her 2nd goal of the match making a total of 5 goals to stockport, who now go through to the next round of the competition.

Sam Piggin found some space for a reverse stick shot but missed by a crucial few inches. Meanwhile Urmston gained in momentum and further troubled the opposition circle to score their third. It took a very skilful reverse stick shot from Lisa Horbury to finally put Stockport on the score sheet but nobody else could add any more. Towards the end of the game Lisa also had couple more chances but unfortunately they went just wide of the mark.
